A market that already knows Finnish early years pedagogy

Through its partnership with SEGi University, HEI Schools has been training early years educators in Kuala Lumpur, Subang Jaya, Sarawak and Penang since 2021, and opened a kindergarten in Cyberjaya in 2023. That means the Finnish approach to play-based learning is already a known quantity for many Malaysian early years professionals, even though it has not yet extended into primary schooling.

What a K-5 school would add

Malaysia's own KSSR curriculum starts primary school around age 7, close to Finland's own starting age, which makes the transition relatively natural. A Finnish, K-5-first school would keep the same generalist class teacher with each cohort through Classes 1 to 5, teach through phenomenon-based learning alongside core subjects, and use formative rather than ranked assessment, complementing Kuala Lumpur's existing Cambridge and IB options rather than competing directly with them.

Where it would sit in the market

Kuala Lumpur's international school sector is well established, but almost entirely built around British, IB or Australian frameworks. A Finnish K-5 school would be a distinct category: not an early years-only concept, and not another Cambridge or IB entrant, but a full primary curriculum built on Finland's own comprehensive school model.
