Finnish Pedagogy vs Multiple Intelligences and Learning Styles

What the learning styles idea actually claims
The learning styles idea, often shortened to VAK for visual, auditory and kinaesthetic, holds that each pupil has a preferred sensory channel for learning and that teaching improves when it is matched to that channel. It became popular in staffrooms from the 1990s onwards and still appears in some teacher training materials.
The trouble is that when researchers test the actual claim, matching a lesson's format to a pupil's assessed style, the predicted benefit does not show up. Multiple systematic reviews of the cognitive science literature have found no reliable evidence that matching instruction to a stated learning style improves outcomes. This is why the idea is frequently described as a neuromyth: a belief about learning that sounds plausible and persists in practice, but that does not hold up under controlled testing.
This does not mean visual, auditory and physical activities are useless. It means the mechanism proposed, sorting pupils by type and matching input accordingly, is the part that fails to replicate.
What multiple intelligences theory actually is
Howard Gardner's multiple intelligences theory, first published in 1983, proposed that human ability is not a single general intelligence but a set of distinct capacities, including linguistic, logical-mathematical, spatial, musical, bodily-kinaesthetic, interpersonal and intrapersonal intelligence, among others.
Gardner's own intent was philosophical: to argue that schools and IQ tests had too narrow a view of what counts as intelligence, and that human talents are broader and more varied than a single test score suggests. He did not design it as a diagnostic tool for identifying a child's dominant intelligence and then teaching to it.
In practice, many schools adopted a simplified version, testing or labelling pupils by their supposed strongest intelligence and tailoring lessons accordingly. This use goes beyond what the theory was built to support, and it has not been validated as an effective teaching method in its own right.
What actually explains Finnish classroom variety
Finnish primary classrooms genuinely do use a wide mix of activities: pupils might discuss a topic, sketch a diagram, build something with their hands, or move around the room, often within the same lesson. This is real and well documented, but it is not evidence for learning styles or multiple intelligences theory.
The better explanation sits closer to mainstream cognitive science. Presenting an idea in more than one format, talking about it, drawing it, acting it out, tends to strengthen memory and understanding for most pupils, not just a supposed subset with a matching style. The practical takeaway is not to abandon variety in the classroom, but to stop justifying it with a debunked theory. Offering pupils several ways into an idea is good practice for K to 5 classrooms regardless of whether learning styles or multiple intelligences theory is true.
It is worth being cautious of resources or training that promise to identify each child's learning style or dominant intelligence and then match teaching to it. That specific promise is the part the evidence does not support, even though the underlying instinct, teach things in more than one way, is sound.
Finland's classrooms are a useful example precisely because their variety was never built on either theory. It grew out of a broader emphasis on engagement, wellbeing, and building understanding through different formats, which is a more modest and better evidenced justification.
