One subject, not four: what ympäristöoppi covers

Finnish primary schools do not teach biology as a stand-alone subject. From grade 1 through grade 6, pupils study the natural world inside ympäristöoppi (environmental studies), a single subject that combines biology, geography, physics, chemistry and health education under one umbrella and, in most schools, one classroom teacher.

The national core curriculum structures this differently for younger and older primary pupils. In grades 1 and 2, lessons stay close to the child's immediate surroundings: the schoolyard, the home, the local pond or park. From grade 3 to grade 6, the same subject widens to cover ecosystems, the human body, matter and energy, and increasingly sustainability, treating a nine-year-old's understanding of a food web and a twelve-year-old's understanding of a local watershed as points on the same continuum rather than separate school subjects.

Much of what looks like a biology lesson in a Finnish grades 1-6 classroom does not happen at a desk. From nature observation to the separate sciences

The single-subject structure ends at grade 7, when Finnish students move into lower secondary school and ympäristöoppi splits into separate biology, geography, physics and chemistry classes, each usually taught by a subject specialist rather than the generalist classroom teacher pupils had before. Health education also continues as its own line of study. This mirrors the pattern Finland uses across science more broadly: broad, integrated, observation-led study in the primary years, followed by more analytical, discipline-specific study once students can reason abstractly about cells, chemical reactions or geological time.

The rationale is developmental rather than administrative. Six years of hands-on nature observation gives pupils a large stock of first-hand experience, a mental library of ponds they have examined and forests they have measured, to draw on once biology becomes a subject built around classification and mechanism rather than direct sensory experience.

Why Finland keeps biology cross-curricular for so long

The approach reflects a broader value in the Finnish curriculum: that a young child's understanding of nature should not be artificially divided into subject boxes before they are ready for that division. The core curriculum names participation, systems thinking, sufficiency and responsibility as themes running through environmental studies, ideas that are naturally cross-curricular. A lesson about a local stream can carry biology content (what lives there), geography content (where the water comes from and goes), and civic content (why the community should care) without treating these as separate domains of knowledge.

For schools outside Finland, the practical takeaway is less about replicating ympäristöoppi as a named subject and more about the underlying habit: treating nature as a primary source, not just a topic, and giving young children sustained, repeated time outdoors rather than occasional themed field trips.

In a Finnish grades 1-6 classroom, a lesson about frogs is just as likely to happen at the edge of a pond as at a desk.
